2003 KLX 400

See that funny little green thing on my mirror which looks like a dog chew toy. I thought it looked like something that might be useful someday so I just raped it around the mirror. The guys gave me a hard time about it on the 2003 Nevada trip, but about day 3 into the ride when one of the guys buckle on his fanny pack broke it worked like a charm at holding the buckle together. Since he gave me such a hard time about it, at the end of the ride he went to give it back to me and I told him since it was such a useful item that he had to keep it on his bike until someone else needed it. Maybe I will see it again someday on somebody else’s bike.

CHASSIS:
IMS 3.2 gallon tank, pro series footpegs. The IMS stuff is quality through and through.
Acerbis rally handgaurds, fenders, shrouds, mirror, tail light and Diamond headlight. The headlight took hours to set-up completly, trying to get the angle correct and clearing the brake cable. I finaly added brackets so I can adjust the angle, and a relay so when on low beam it runs a single 50 watt 12 degree spot. On high beam it runs another 50 watt flood plus a small 20 watt spot.
E-Line skid pan, clutch gaurd and ignition cover gaurd definatly one of the best looking gaurds.
Sunstar 47 tooth rear sprocket. Running the stock 15 tooth counter sprocket and the 47t rear just about splits the gearing between the dirt set-up and the street set-up.
Works Connection Pro clutch lever.
Rental bars
Eibach 5.7Kg shock spring.
Revalved shock and forks.
Garmin GPSMAP 76S in a IMS GPS holder on a RAM mount system.
Baja Designs grip heater.

ENGINE:
FMF Power Bomb head pipe, Q Muffler
3 x 3 in Air box modifications. When I ran the stock carb. I ran it with a .9 mm shim under the needle. I now run a 39mm FCR from the dirt model. I tried it with the cost enrichner with a 150 main and the needle all the way up, but my fuel milage was not very good. 27 MPG on trail rides and 44 MPG in the city. So I am going to try it with out the coast enrichner and I will start with a 160 main, 38 pilot jet, 70 pilot air jet and the needle in the 4th clip.
Future items: cams, big piston and maybe a stroked crankpin and ignitor.

I started using the GPS back in 2003. As you can see I am using a RAM handlebar mount to an IMS cradle. This set-up seams to work very well as I have over 4000 off-road miles with it. I liked the RAM mount for it's freedom of movement. My hope is that if I crash bad enough to get the bike upside down that the GPS will just push down below the handlebars and not get to badly damaged.

With the stock speedo, GPS, Rally guards, grip heaters and cross bar there is not much room left, so I made the switch plate you see above to mount an ignition switch, an on-off switch for the lights and the grip heater switch. When I need to run a roll chart I have a shorter crossbar pad and I put the roll chart next to the GPS right over the switches. This works fine and still gives clearance from the front brake cable.
